Local man arrested for early February armed robbery

A Southington man was arrested and charged with the February armed robbery of a Kaival Foodmart/Gulf Gas Station.

On Friday, March 7, police arrested Brett Downs, 31, at his residence.

According to police, Downs committed an armed robbery on February 7, at the Kaival Food Mart / Gulf Gas Station at 1123 Meriden Waterbury Turnpike. The arrest warrant alleges that Downs entered the store brandishing a silver retractable carpet knife. According to the warrant, Downs then ordered the clerk to open the store’s cash register by force. Then, after taking the cash drawer containing approximately $180 dollars, he ran from the business.

stemmed from a forensic examination of evidence that was seized during an investigation. The forensic exam was conducted by the State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Scientific Services.

Downs was charged with second degree robbery and sixth degree larceny. Bond was set at $100,000 with a March 10 court date.
