Southington firefighters, with the help of passing motorists, were able to safely help two occupants of a car that went off the road near Exit 30 on Interstate 84, coming to rest in the nearby river.

The call came in to fire dispatch at 6:30 p.m. Firefighters responded to find that the car had careened down a 100-foot embankment, coming to rest in two to three feet of water in the river.

Firefighters were able to extricate the two occupants from the vehicle, using a rope system to get them back up the embankment to the waiting ambulances.

The occupants have not yet been identified. They were taken to Hartford Hospital by AMR. Officials did not know their condition.

“All members of the fire department worked in extremely difficult conditions to remove the victims of this crash,” stated Captain Alan Zygmunt, in a release. “In addition, several other motorists stopped to assist in the early stages of the incident which made the overall operation go smoothly.”

The Southington Fire Department and Connecticut State Police are still on scene at this hour investigating the crash.  The exit 30 east bound ramp is closed and one lane of I-84 remains closed while the police complete the investigation and remove the vehicle from the river.

More information will be released as soon as it is available.
