When police were called to investigate reports of an argument on Mount Vernon Road in mid-April, it sparked an investigation that resulted in a search and seizure investigation that resulted in the discovery of an indoor marijuana growing operation.

On April 12, Southington police found Matthew Dufresne acting irrationally and beating a third male inside the residence at 2164 Mount Vernon Road. When officers entered the residence, they found Dufresne beating a victim in the bathroom before he turned on the officers.

NEW BRITAIN (AP)—A 19-year-old Southington man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a fatal fire that prosecutors say began when he threw a firecracker into a friend’s apartment on Darling Street on June 22, 2014.

Eric Morelli entered the plea on Monday, May 18 in New Britain Superior Court as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

Morelli told police he was attempting to wake up Kristen Milano’s brother with the firecracker, but it spread throughout the apartment. The Southington Fire Department responded to the fire at 4:30 a.m. on June 22. Jason Milano and his aunt escaped, but nineteen-year-old Kristen Milano became trapped and died in the fire.

Morelli is due back in court for sentencing on July 23. He faces 10 years in prison and five years of probation, though the deal gives his attorney the right to argue for a lesser sentence.
